What I’ve Learned During My 1st Full Week As A Full Time Employee

Now Brewing: Really crappy office coffee. Couldn’t tell you the brand and all I can say is that it has little to no taste. But it’s coffee and I need it.

Okay so I have officially been a working gal for five days now and today it’s casual Friday at the office and apparently it’s casual no-show Friday because it’s dead and there’s no one around. I guess that’s the casual thing to do on a Friday before a holiday weekend. But here I sit…because I’m an intern and it’s my first week and there is a slight possibility that maybe at some obscure time like 2 p.m., they’ll find a shred of work for me to do.

Anyway, I am loving my new internship and have compiled a list of things I have learned this first week. So here they are in all their glory:

  • Sleep is precious : I mean I already sort of knew this one but I never valued the eight hours of precious sleep time before this week. Those who know me know I am one of the biggest night owls you will ever meet. Getting up before noon is always a challenge for me and going to bed before 1? Unheard of…so yeah, a shock was in store for my body when I had to get up at 6 a.m…needless to say, it’s been bed before 10 p.m. most nights this week for me. Which leads me to my next point…
  • Coffee is truly the drink of the Gods: Coffee. Coffee. Coffee. My go-to daily. I am offically onto three cups a day and it’s scaring me. Another thing that scares me…
  • Adobe Creative Suite is massive  : Seriously, the program is huge and I probably never will know it all. I thought I was functional enough at it coming into this internship–wow! I have learned so much more this week, it’s insanity. Also insane:
  • How Terrible I Am at Sprial Binding  : I am not only terrible (think having to reprint pages multiple times because I missed the edge of the paper with the holes) but I am also ridiculously slow. The decreased speed allows me to be a bit better at making sure I do it right buttttt gosh I am slow…and bad.. just really bad at it all around actually. But I am really good at…
  • Editing: It’s definitely one of my passions. Nothing better than your supervisor complementing your editing by saying, “Nice catch.” Yup, I even found an error in the company style guide… I AM that nerdy. But I am a pretty typical full-timer because I now know…
  • There is nothing wrong with…: an after work glass of wine, or scotch, or a cold beer–or all three. Seriously, if coffee isn’t the drink of the Gods (or at least the full-time Gods), it’s gotta be alcohol. There is nothing better than that relaxation that first sip brings at the end of the day.

I guess I have learned above all that even if you think you’re an adult and completely grown up and ready to face the world – you’re not and you should appreciate life when you’re young and don’t have to drive in rush hour, in the rain, before dawn – to work.
